認知症の定義１
【脳血管疾患、アルツハイマー病その他の要因に基づく脳の器質的な変化により日常生活に支障が生じる程度にまで記憶機能及びその他の認知機能が低下した状態をいう】
つまり、脳の病気や老化などにより、神経細胞が減少し、記憶や判断力などに障害が起こり、日常生活に支障をきたす疾患のことといえます。
認知症の中でも、慢性硬膜下血腫や正常圧水頭症などは、適切な治療を受けることにより回復することもあります。
したがって、高齢者などがいつもと違う「おかしな行動や言動」などをしている場合は、早期に専門の医療機関での診療を受けましょう。認知症であるかどうかは、簡単な検査（問診）から画像診断、血液検査、知能テストなどを行うことで、総合的に判断され診断されます。
